Trek World Racing Team Launch

With new bikes, new kit and 2 new team members in Emily Batty (CAN) and Neko Mulally (USA), the Trek World Racing team camp which concluded Sunday in Arizona, set the tone for the upcoming season. In pursuit of key goals that revolve around the World Championships in September and the summer long World Cup season, the 7 rider team will also be supporting other key events throughout the year, in particular this weekend's Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California, the Swiss Racer Cup Series, the new US Pro Gravity Tour, Crankworx and other selected events.

Fresh from their two stage victories in South Africa at the Absa Cape Epic, Swiss brothers Mathias and Lukas Flueckiger joined their new team mate Emily Batty for the first time in Arizona and enjoyed their time out riding the trails on their new Top Fuels. The new bike (pictured below) has a very distinct appearance and is once again loaded with the performance technology needed for podium results. Both Mathias and Emily have the Under 23 World Title as shared major goals for 2010, while Lukas wants to finish top 5 overall in the World Cup, something he narrowly missed doing in 2009.
Lukas: "For me having two World Cup podiums last year was a great start on this new team for me, but we have learned a lot and the engineers have done some great work over winter and we're excited by the developments we have seen at camp, so I would really like to get my first World Cup win this year."

Emily: "I have been so impressed and amazed at the team set up, this is a such a dream come true for me and I know I will have the greatest support as I set out for the 2010 race season. I'm excited about racing in the new colors this weekend at Monterey".

Mathias: "I'm really looking forward to Champery, at the middle of the season. That's for 2 reasons. One is because that's where Luk and I made history as brothers on the podium last year, in front of our family and friends...but also because from Champery onwards, I become a full time racer having completed my studies and other work!"
On the gravity side, last year's trio of Tracy Moseley (GBR), Justin Leov (NZL) and Andrew Neethling (RSA) are joined by US phenom Neko Mulally for 2010, as the team aims for the number 1 ranking in teams classification. Riders are once again aboard the Session 88 (pictured below) with its race proven geometry and class leading weight.

Tracy: "It's been a pretty harsh winter in the UK this past few months, but I've been working as hard as ever. It was nice to be in the sun in Arizona and now I'm looking forward to repeating my win at Sea Otter from last year, as well as doing the Dual Slalom. The World Cup promises to be the most competitive for a long time in Women's DH, with a new World Champ in Emmeline, Sabrina (Jonnier) always a tough competitor and the return of Rachel (Atherton) to the mix. Can't wait!"

Justin: "I've been working hard in the off-season, but I'm all about racing. Getting back with the team at camp and seeing all the new gear just gets me amped for the race season ahead. Looking forward to hitting the tracks again and hopefully some more podiums this year."

Andrew: "Out training with the boys in Arizona and I feel as fresh as ever and I'm ready to take on a new season. I’m ripped and raring to go!" I actually raced less in the off season than I planned to, mainly due to earthquakes and such, which in a way has worked out pretty well or me, coming in a lot fresher."

Neko: "I was really happy to be at camp in Arizona and meet all the people from Trek, Fox and the team that do all the hard work behind the scenes, and I'm stoked to hang out with my new team mates. For Sea Otter this year I really want to improve on last year, and I'm counting the days to my first ever World Cup in Maribor. The support of the team is amazing and I'm hoping to make them proud this year." Team Director: "So much work has gone in over the off season with the bikes, the upgrading of our team vehicles, and a bunch of other cool stuff, that it's almost a feeling of relief to get on the road and start the season. All of the riders have very specific goals we'll be helping them to achieve and with the arrival of Emily and Neko, we have a very full program ahead of us. The new bikes look amazing, and together with the new kits and the testing we've been doing with Fox Racing Shox, as well some other surprises we have the fans, it should be an amazing season".

April 7th saw Commencal and the Athertons launch their new look team, as the complete family roster prepare for a 2010 season back at full strength.

2008 World Champion Rachel, returns this year after having to sit out last year due to an injury sustained in a training accident. ODI - X Fusion - Intese Team Announced!

The ODI and X Fusion racing programs have agreed to combine into one. This alliance has developed both programs into one well-founded squad. Team ODI X Fusion is proud to announce their team line up for 2010. The roster will include Sean “Griz” McClendon, Brad Oien, JD Swanguen and Ryan Condrashoff, who will be contesting the Pro GRT championship series and competing in select international events.

Sean McClendon returning to the program after being picked up mid season in 2009 has high expectation for himself. McClendon said, “My whole life revolves around boosting the American downhill scene. For a couple of years I helped cast the media spotlight on riders from our soil and now I’m back to do-battle with them at the races. It’s a childhood dream come true to be racing for Intense and I’m really happy to be back with X-Fusion and ODI.

Brad Oien spent the off season in Australia again because he can’t get enough racing in one hemisphere. Eager for the season to come he said, “2010 is going to be a good and productive year for everyone involved with the ODI X Fusion race program. I’m glad to retain my long running relationship with ODI and begin new ones with companies such as X Fusion!”

We’re gearing up for the first round of the 2010 Pro Gravity Tour on April 22-25 held in the picturesque town of Port Angeles, Washington. The kickoff to what its set to be an astounding national mtb gravity race series is going to take the Pro GRT to new levels! Not only will the event be close to some great cycling & snowboarding destinations, but it’ll be fairly easy to travel to, as it’s the weekend following the Sea Otter Classic! With a majority of the industry already in attendance, we’re expecting to see a GREAT turnout of athletes, teams & industry alike! Both Trek World Racing & Team Giant will be in attendance, not to mention many more!

Port Angeles, where the mountains meet the sea, will also be the 2nd round of the NWCup. The venue is just 3 miles from town with ample lodging and dining opportunities. Dry Hill's trails are legendary for providing both a challenge and super fun, flowy trails. A large network of trails that all start and end in the same spot ensures a variety of courses for the riders throughout the series.

The Pro GRT will bring in top riders from across the country and world. Last year the attendance was over 400 racers for this event. As a promoter, this is both exciting and very challenging. Dry Hill is not a ski resort with existing services, so we set it up and tear it down for each event. Additionally, we have very limited level space for pit/tech use. It is very important to let us know exactly what you need as soon as possible so we can do our best to accommodate your needs. All space is first come, first serve.

The weekend of this event, there is also a Jazz Festival going on that draws a lot of out-of-towners, so we encourage you to make lodging arrangements as soon as you can.
Some things to consider:

-We will have at least one person on-site at all times for security purposes.
-The North Olympic Peninsula enjoys weather not typical of the Pacific Northwest. Often we are dry while surrounded by rain.
-There is no water or electric service on-site. You must be fully self-contained. Generators welcome.
-There will be a food-vendor on-site serving breakfast, lunch & dinner.
-The trails and venue area are behind a locked gate, so if you are wanting to pre-ride or set-up early, you need to let us know. The event is scheduled for Thursday the 22nd thru Sunday the 25th.
-The venue is only three miles from town and only one mile from the nearest campground.

DRD Tomac's Kieran Bennett Back on Track at Oceanias! Podiums twice – 3rd in 4X and 4th in Downhill!

(March 21, 2010) Dunedin, New Zealand – DRD Team rider Kieran Bennett takes home two stellar results from one of the most prestigious cycling events in the south pacific! The Oceania Mountain Bike Championships, held in Dunedin, New Zealand, showcases the best mountain bike racers from Australia, New Zealand and the region all battling it out to win the title of Oceania Champion.

Following a streak of problematic races, Kieran seems to have gotten his rhythm back as he has finished his second race aboard his new DRD Tomac Primer... and with just as many podiums! With a new bike & a new team, Kieran is quick to prove just why he’s one of the quickest Kiwis on the circuit!

After a last minute decision to race 4X, Kieran promptly proved that his decision would be fruitful. Within a few practice runs, Kieran had the course dialled and had some big inside lines ready on the turns.

Going into qualifying, Kieran was pleasantly surprised to find himself in 6th position after a fairly average run.

During the race, Kieran’s inside lines paid off, as he was still getting accustomed with gated racing. Getting pushed to the back, he had to dig deep and make a move for advancement. The next round once again required Kieran to make a move against some veteran 4X riders. After a few strong passes in the first two corners, Kieran found himself in the lead & holding on until the finish.

In the finals, Kieran would find himself next to strong competition in Wyn Masters and Daniel Franks

“I definitely wasn’t expecting to be in the finals that when I decided to race, but I was stoked knowing I had made it that far,” said Kieran

Wyn Masters and Daniel Franks would take the top two spots at the finish, while Kieran was all smiles with his strong 3rd place performance.

Kieran’s main focus this weekend would undoubtedly be in the Downhill. The track suited Kieran well as it varied in terrain & was a lot of fun to ride. Kieran had to hold himself back from riding, so he wouldn’t exert himself doing too many practice runs, and remain fresh for race day.

Kieran was feeling confident and knew he could pull a good result. However, qualifying would prove to be bittersweet as a mechanical would cause a bit of a dampener in his plans, as he wanted to leave the start gate hard and see how he ranked against his competition.

“I sprinted hard out of the start and into the first few turns,” explained Kieran. “As I was pedalling out of the 3rd turn on the track, my chain dropped and got jammed out in my guide! I was pretty gutted so I just tried to carry as much speed as possible for the rest of the run. I somehow still managed to come in 12th, so I felt good going into the finals.”

Kieran’s confidence going into his race run would prove essential as there were a number of elite world cup level racers in attendance.

“Straight away I was feeling good on my DRD Tomac Primer and hardly felt like any time had passed by entering the final wooded section,” said Kieran. “Knowing all I had to do was make it out of the trees and through the 4x section clean, I started to ramp it up a little more, until I hit the finish and into the lead!”
In the end, Kieran’s time would be good enough for 4th place behind fellow countrymen Cam Cole, Nathan Rankin and Wyn Masters who have all been at the top of their game as of late.

All-in-all, an extremely successful weekend for Kieran, as he makes another big step towards the top of the podium! His confidence is on the rise & he’s getting comfortable on his new DRD Tomac!

Next up on the agenda, team DRD Tomac will be competing simultaneously in two different states. While Robin Baloochi will be attending the first round of the NWCup in Port Angeles, Washington; John Keep & Brad King will race the first round of the California Gold Cup in Fontana, California.

Anneke Beerten: NEW SEASON 2010

I can't believe how fast the off season has past by again. We're only a couple of weeks away from the start of our new 2010 season. In preparation of the new season I've spend the last couple of weeks in the U.S. for some training and racing.

I had a great time racing Downhill at Fontana, it's nice to have some racing in the winter time and a lot of pro's come out there to race and to get ready for the season. While I was there I got a chance to visit the Intense factory and to pick up my new Slopestyle 2 bike :) The bike feels great and I had no problem getting used to it at all. The first weekend I raced in Fontana I even won. The second time I got 2nd behind Melissa Buhl.

It's always nice to get some races in before the World Cup season kicks off. Get the nerves going and test some of the new products. I will be running the same program as last season with my main sponsors Veltec (the BeNeLux distributer for Intense) and Intense USA. The collaboration with these two companies makes it possible for me to stay on Intense bikes, be a professional athlete, and of course keep doing what I love most; shredding down the worlds most beautiful mountainsides. Like last season I will be getting the full team support of the Swiss based Suspension Center team, it's great to be a part of Gery's team again!

New to my program this season will be Michelin tires, Lizard Skins grips, Skins, CTI Braces and Stoicagraffix. I am very happy and proud to have these new sponsors on board and looking forward to work with all of them.

And a very big thanks of course to my partners who have been supporting me throughout the last few years already, and who will keep supporting me for the coming season.

Euro Fourcross Cup 2010

The Fourcross Alliance is happy to introduce the EURO FOURCROSS SERIES 2010!

Thanks to enthusiasm of experienced organizers and their sponsors the Euro Fourcross Series 2010 will pay a visit to five European countries, starting already on April 18th in Prague.

The Fourcross Alliance is successful in accomplishing its plan for which the international alliance was established - to be a platform for exchanging information and experience of fourcross supporters and fans. The foundation meeting of FA held at the occasion of 2009 MTB World Cup finals in Schladming brought a
lot of interesting ideas, however it was too late for their application in this year’s World Cup 4X.

The main subject of FA members’ discussions during winter months became the conception of the European racing series as a laboratory for testing practical application of our plans. The idea of European series – old perhaps as fourcross – has finally obtained its sharp outline. Although the world financial situation does not favour sports projects very much, we managed to find a relatively cheap solution how to introduce the first year of the Euro Fourcross Series even this year! Thus, thanks to enthusiasm of experienced organizers and their sponsors the Euro Fourcross Series 2010 will pay a visit to five European countries.

iXS Downhill Cup 2010 – first website for registration activated

This year, the iXS Downhill Series will again include a wide range of race events. First and foremost is the “iXS European Downhill Cup”, with venues in 7 countries. In addition to races in Germany, Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland there will also be events in Great Britain and the Czech Republic. This makes the international series second in importance only to the World Cup. The website for registration to take part in the first race in Innerleithen has now been activated. The dates for Cup events are as follows:

The high profile of both series is reflected by the large numbers of competitors, also from the international community. This year the Swiss Cup includes two new venues, both well-known on the downhill scene: Monte Tamaro will be the location for the first race in the series and, after a break of several years, Crans Montana will once again be hosting an event. Leigh Donovan - FONTANA WINTER SERIES FINALS - Race Report

It was on ‘THE WALL’ section of the course
that 1995 World Champion Leigh Donovan could
hear her 4 1/2 yr old daughter Grace cheering -
“GO MOMMA” and that gave her enough legs to
pedal into the finish in 3rd place.

“Ya, we got smoked by Buhl” Said Leigh
after the race, “I did a run with her and I was on
the same pace on the little rocky sections, but
she just motored away on the 3 climbs we had in
this race, it should have been called a super-D, I
can not complain, I got 3rd behind 2 girls that
race and train for a living and I think 4th place
was 12 seconds behind me. I am interested to
see how I go on a proper DH track.”

Leigh also got on her new Marzocchi
suspension for the race, “I took 2lbs off my bike
by removing what I had before! I hooked up with
Tom Rogers and Bryson from Marzocchi and
they were real excited to get me on board, I rode
for Marzocchi 17 years ago on my first pro team,
so its been a long time! Absolutely loved the 888
Evo fork, TR dialed it in for me, I did not have to
touch it. I also got my new shimano SPD shoes
and blinged them out so I have some girly vibe
going on, I am going to go full moto podium
speech and give you the, ‘my oakley, Fox, giro
kit looked awesome and my specialized tires
really hooked up out there’ hahaha”

Missing British Mountain Biker in VIRGINIA (USA)

Ok listen up people, this is very serious. A good mountain bike friend of mine from back home has gone missing in America. His name is Jonny Dorey.

Jonny is 5′11″, about 182lbs, and was last seen wearing a WHITE AND BLUE PLAID JACKET, NAVY BLUE BACKPACK, DARK JEANS and BLACK SNEAKERS. It is also likely that he has his black mountain bike with him. He may be wearing glasses and also has a very strong english accent. Jonny’s been missing since March 2nd and the lack of news on his whereabouts is beginning to become unsettling. He is an exchange student at VCU in Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A. He lives in the GRC dorms and his bike is missing. He hasn’t been to classes, his phone’s been off for days, he hasn’t used any of his banks cards nor logged in to e-mail accounts or Facebook.

After one year none racing , I am back on the track and happy to be on the bike 100 %, it will be 10 months I get my surgery, thanks to my doctor and Miguel my trainer who make me work hard to be back where I am now ! “Everything is possible” he always told me during 10 months! Thanks Miguel

This weekend was the first event of the CG Racing BRIGADE in Sant Andreu de la Barca, the weekend was full of fun for me! I could ride my new Santa Cruz V10, new suspension Rock, and a lot more of course like my new protection gear O Neal ! I was like a kid in a candy shop : ) I could work as well with Kevin my mechanic and X1 Racing Suspension to do some tuning on the suspension during the practice. Well, like I say all those good things make the weekend so much fun more than a normal race. I finish 6th and really pleased about it because the times was so tight. I am really happy how the BRIGADE is running and I feel good for the next events! Thanks to all the fan who were here to see the first event of the BRIGADE, it means a lot to me : )

Long time industry insider Craig “Stikman” Glaspell to run Intense marketing department.

Craig brings with him an extensive background in the bicycle business, beginning in the mid-80’s and ranging from retail to world cup racing. He was best known as team manager and wrench for some of the best racers in the world, including Brian Lopes and Leigh Donovan, who later became his wife.

Stikman left the bike industry in 2005 to pursue a career as a professional photographer and start a family.

“I had become a professional photographer with many bicycle and motocross industry clients after I left the bike biz and we also started a successful ecommerce store. But I was really missing the bike scene. I have a 15 year history with Intense, either choosing their bikes for my race teams or riding them myself, I am really pumped to finally be a part of a brand that I can unequivocally be proud of.” Glaspell said.

Craig will be working in the creative department with Jeff Steber and will be the company’s contact person for all marketing, media and PR projects. “It is going to be a fun, new adventure with Stikman. DRD Tomac's Kieran Bennett 2nd Place at Skyline Screamer; Baloochi's Back!

Escondido, California – Dean Racing Development (DRD) Tomac kicked off our unofficial start to the 2010 season this past weekend in two different countries and with great attention! Team leaders Kieran Bennett & Robin Baloochi debuted their new DRD Tomac Primer 220’s at two events – the Skyline Screamer in Wellington, New Zealand, and the Southridge Winter Series finals in Fontana, California.

Having limited time on his new Tomac Primer, Kieran surprised a number of people with his great battle in the Skyline Screamer (an eliminator “3-cross” style format down a wide open firebreak). With a number of elite riders in contention for a sizeable purse, this event was sure to be a great race.

Kieran handled the new bike perfectly, and was seen with a big smile the whole way down the track. Winning round after round, Kieran found himself in the finals, where he would meet another world cup veteran racer in Nathan Rankin. An epic battle ensued with both Kieran & Nathan exchanging leads. Unfortunately for Kieran, Nathan was able to squeeze past him on the last possible passing point & took the win. Not all was a loss, as Kieran pocket a cool $500 for 2nd place.

“This was by far the most fun I’ve had on a bike in a long time and I think a lot of that is thanks to my new DRD Tomac” said Kieran. “I’ve never felt so instantly comfortable and confident on a new bike. I can’t say thanks enough to the organisers for putting on a great event and making it possible for me to be there, and also to Jeremiah at DRD for taking me in this season and putting me on an amazing bike!”

At the same time, here in the states, veteran racer Robin Baloochi returns from a 3 year hiatus to rock the DRD Tomac colors! With an extensive history & knowledge of racing, Robin is going to be a great asset to the team! “Getting his feet wet again” & “working out the kinks” at smaller events like Fontana and other upcoming local events, Robin will sure to be one to watch at the 2010 Pro Gravity Tour!

“Overall the first day on the bike went better than expected and rain showers through Saturday night made for real good conditions come race day,” said Robin. “During Sunday morning’s practice I somehow managed to bash a rock and knock my crank arm out of alignment, but with some innovative solutions between Jeremiah and some friends, we were somehow able to salvage a race run. At the end of the day, I finished 24th without any big hang ups. The goal of the weekend was met, which was to get the new bike rolling, get me in the gate to start running against the clock again, and figure out any kinks that need to be worked until the official season starts at the Sea Otter Classic.”

2010 Professional Mountain Bike Gravity Tour (Pro GRT)

Colorado Springs, Colo. (February 23, 2010) – USA Cycling announced today the 2010 USA Cycling Professional Mountain Bike Gravity Tour (Pro GRT). In its second year, the five-race series will continue to raise the level of competitive gravity racing across the United States by providing a consistent stage of international-caliber events for elite gravity racers to showcase their downhill skills.

The Pro GRT is a downhill-only series for 2010 and will visit four states from April to September, beginning with a return visit to Port Angeles, Wash. for the Northwest Cup, April 24-25. The series will then make a trip to the opposite coast for the Plattekill Gravity Open in New York’s Roxbury Bike Park, May 22-23. Midway through the season, racers will contest the Northstar-at-Tahoe event in Truckee, Calif., June 26-27. The Pro GRT will then move to Winter Park, Colo. for the Trestle Bike Park (Crankworx Colorado), July 31-August 1, before concluding again with the Whiteface 5th Annual 5K Downhill in Lake Placid, New York, September 11-12.

Each of the five stops will offer series ranking points to top finishers, resulting in overall individual titles for professional men and women. Additionally, competitors will have the opportunity to accumulate international ranking points as two of the five races are inscripted on the UCI calendar. The racers with the most points throughout the five-race series will be recognized as the best gravity athletes competing on U.S. soil.

The 2010 series will also feature an Amateur GRT which, like the Pro GRT, will give Expert-level Category 1 racers the opportunity to compete against each other for an overall series crown.

It seems yesterday we were saying goodbye to all our friends who followed us during the amazing 2009 racing season and we are here again to speak about the coming 2010 one.

There have been some rumors flying around during the off season about team Playbiker, and it has been very tough to keep “our secrets” until now. But let us say we are really excited for the coming season, that we are going to live with the usual “bunch of mates”, but faster than ever!

We are very happy to welcome on team Playbiker the kiwi Wyn Masters, one of the rising stars of the World Cup circuit. With is moto-riding-style and his daily brainwaves, we are pretty sure he will be able to add several good results to the Playbiker’s biography, but also we won’t never get bored.

Here what Wyn says about: “I am stoked to have signed with team Kenda-Playbiker for the 2010 season, it is awesome to be able to be on a team with three good friends of mine and no doubt we will have a good time along the way. I look forward to putting some great results together with the help of being on the best products like Lapierre Bikes, Fox Suspensions and Kenda Tires.”.

We have been given also a wild card to Edo Franco, a young rider who won in 2008 the Junior Italian Championship, which took place on Pila World Cup track. He will race together with Wyn in both downhill and 4x.

Few words from Edo: “I am really happy to be part of team Kenda-Playbiker for 2010 season. It is the first time I race for a professional team and I am going to have a great opportunity to achieve my goals. It is amazing for me to have team mates like Shaun, Nathan and Wyn: they are excellent riders and good traveller fellows as well. I have much to learn from them.”.

Kenda-Playbiker is very glad to announce also that for 2010 the team athletes will race with the performant and captivate Lapierre DH-920 frame and the top-notch Fox Suspensions.

Proven Coating Technology

The Kashima Coat technology has been used for years across the motorcycle and automotive industries in suspension components and clutch and valve train assemblies because of its low-friction and ultra-wear resistance properties.

In the revolutionary Kashima Coat process, lubricating molybdenum disulfide is deposited, via electrical induction, into the billions of micropores on the surface of hard-anodized aluminum. With its debut on the international mountain bike racing circuit, the distinctive gold colored, Kashima coated stanchions maintain better lubrication characteristics, and the lightweight aluminum components treated with Kashima Coat attain a level of hardness and abrasion resistance four times tougher than standard hard-anodized aluminum.

Race Tested — Numerous Wins Tell the Tale

Throughout the 2009 mountain bike racing season, FOX Racing Shox utilized select sponsored athletes to test and race on suspension treated with Kashima Coating. “Before we started using Kashima Coat, we’d been testing and racing on electroless nickel coated upper tubes during the past two seasons,” explained FOX Racing Shox Mountain Bike Race Manager, Mark Fitzsimmons. “Although the friction properties were decent, the nickel’s durability was not. The Kashima parts we raced on maintained the low friction requirements we were after and exhibited excellent durability — a very rare combination to find at the World Cup level with its wet and muddy conditions.”

Beyond the obvious benefit of added durability, the significant decrease in friction proved to provide a tangible increase in suspension performance. Athletes who tested and raced with Kashima coated FOX Racing Shox suspension reported an improved overall consistency and feel with Kashima Coat.

Most professional mountain bike athletes take it easy between two racing seasons. Roger Rinderknecht experienced something different: A few days after new year he became father for the second time, and apart from that he also had to find a new bike sponsor.

After Roger Rinderknecht had become a father for the second time in January – his son Ty is being accompanied by a daughter called Cya, his focus changed to the planning of the next season. Danny Hart & Duncan Riffle Join Jared Rando on 'Giant Factory Off-Road Team'

Giant Factory Off-Road Team Expands
In addition to the new team, the Giant Factory Off-Road Team is expanding for 2010. The roster includes two new gravity racing talents who will compete globally on the World Cup circuit: two-time U.S. Downhill Champion Duncan Riffle and 18-year-old British downhiller Danny Hart, winner of the 2009 World Cup DH Junior series and bronze medalist at the 2009 World Junior Downhill Championships.

Riffle, 23, is currently ranked 21st in the UCI world downhill rankings and looking forward to focusing on the most prestigious international downhill events.

“I’ve always been a fan of Giant bikes and I can’t wait to hit the 2010 World Cup series on the new Giant Glory,” Riffle said. “To be successful on the World Cup circuit, you need the right equipment and the right support, and I know I’ll have that.”

The other Giant Factory Off-Road Team rider with a global agenda is 2008 Red Bull Rampage silver medalist Kurt Sorge. The 21-year-old Canadian has developed into a household name in slopestyle and freeride competition and will headline the biggest freeride competitions and films in 2010.

Four other Giant Factory Off-Road Team riders will have a continental focus in 2010. One is Australian Jared Rando, a veteran Australian DH and slalom racer who medaled at both the Sea Otter Classic and Crankworx events last year. Rando will focus on Australian and North American events and will continue to play an important role in Giant’s product development efforts.

Three familiar names make up the cross-country contingent of the Giant Factory Off-Road Team. Former U.S. National Champions Carl Decker and Kelli Emmett will each continue to focus on North American XC and Super D racing, and British Olympian Oli Beckingsale will compete primarily in U.K. and European XC events.

With two teams canvassing every major event in mountain biking, Giant looks forward to its biggest year yet in off-road competition.

Leigh Donovan found a little time away
from work to go play in the perfect conditions
out at Fontana. It had rained on the course
pretty heavily on friday, but by race day-sunday,
the track was flawless. Leigh hiked up sunday
morning for a couple of practice runs and had
the course dialed.

“I had the technical stuff pretty dialed, but
once I got to the ‘wall‘ my body seized up again!
I could not pedal too good, but I tried to dig a
little deeper than last weekend here, where I just
about to came to a complete stop! (Leigh laughs
hysterically at this point). I also put on a new
back tire for this weekend. I had a full DH tire
setup last weekend and everyone said I was
nuts, so I put the SPECIALIZED ‘Captain’ on the
rear and noticed a big difference in acceleration.
I am not used to these tires yet because they are
so amazing, they hook up like nothing I ever
used back in my day, tires just were not this
good when I was racing 10 years ago. I am really
stoked with specialized tires.”

Leigh also raced this weekend in some of
her new gear: “I just landed a deal with FOX
Clothing and GIRO, so I was in a completely new
kit, which is usually a bad idea, but everything fit
perfect right out of the box and I felt like a pro
again! It has been nice to be at the point where I
can just pick the best stuff now instead of riding
for whoever pays the most money like the old
days.”

Leigh’s next event will be coaching the
RAYSMTB.com womens only clinic in Cleveland
Ohio on Feb. 20/21 and then the Southridge
winter series finals on the first weekend of

Roger Rinderknecht on BMC bikes for 2010

February 9th, Grenchen (Switzerland): Swiss 4X and BMX racer Roger Rinderknecht hits the UCI World Cup circus on BMC bikes in 2010. The podium of the mountain bike 4X World Championships is waiting for Roger and BMC. The qualification for the BMX Olympics in 2012 is also on Roger’s agenda.

Mike Hürlimann, BMC Chief Executive Officer, explains the strategic decision: „BMC always had their roots in the mountain bike sport. It’s just not on everybody’s mind anymore, due to the big success of BMC road bikes during the last years. We are in the strong opinion that we will be able to increase the brand awareness within the important mountain bike segment again by forming a strong partnership with Roger. Our Fourstroke, Trailfox, Speedfox und Supertrail models have already been receiving great test results in the worldwide media, but the input from Roger, who is a well experienced racer and freerider, will be very useful for us to keep on progressing in R&D. We are really looking forward to an exciting and valuable partnership!”

Roger can’t wait to be back in business: “I have been training a lot after breaking my upper arm in August last year and I am back at 100% of my former riding performance. Twelve months, twelve short documentaries on a long way to success. Training. Races. Travelling. Life. This is TWELVE - a new project about the mountain biker and BMXer Michal Prokop.

By a coarse visual inspection, TWELVE shares the style of the michal.prokop09 calendar, however it uses a wider range of video technologies. Rob Trnka's camera takes in the past month of Michal Prokop, just as he has actually spent it. Without any adornments and planning. It doesn't aim to celebrate the leading actor; it wants to capture him through its sincereness. TWELVE doesn't create dramatic situations, but it catches them if they arise.

In first days of each month you can find out what were the last four weeks like for Michal Prokop. Interesting? Boring? Tiring? Cheerful? Successful...? As does every real calendar, TWELVE also starts in January. Tons of iron, hours in the fitness center with freezing temperatures and snow all around. This is the way Michal's year 2010 started - a season dedicated to four-cross. BMX has already started to come through, with qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games.

"When working on the calendar I understood that Michal doesn't have to make somebody else of him or to create another - media - face. This helped me a lot in making decision how TWELVE should look like. Anyway, in Michal's case his spontaneity doesn't look affectedly ... When preparing scenarios I only need to know where he will appear. I try to record things for which there is no place or time anywhere else - time when the camera is switched off. No sensations, but moments, which may look trivially alone, but which will make sense when put together with Honza Mocnak. For me, it will be important when somebody will switch the result of my work on more than once," comments Rob Trnka about his work on TWELVE. Trnka is the photographer, and this time also the cameraman and screenwriter.

Editor, post-production, music, graphics ... Jan Mocnak. Yes, it is not a typing error in subtitles. This man of all seasons who created the graphical look of the calendar michal.prokop09 and his websites www.ProkopRider.net undertook the responsibility for the wide spectrum of work on the TWELVE project.

When selecting equipment, taking into account expected use and output demands, the team chose the Panasonic Lumix GH1 video reflex camera as the optimum solution. Sound like and unusual solution for video technology in Full HD quality? The first hands-on experience confirms it was the right choice. At first sight the compact body, accessible cost, and manual focusing capability transformed worked to their advantage when using a Zuiko adapter... all of this combined makes the Lumix GH1 an excellent tool for reporting work.

I just wanted to let you know that PINNEDmtb.com is back in action! I put the site on hiatus towards the end of last season as there were many projects & priorities that I needed to take care of. Since the previous site took time to build up a new page every time I wanted to post news, it got to be difficult keeping things updated. So I’m revamping the site with a new format. That way, I can keep the news, photos & reports flowin from the road.

Gene Hamilton of Betterride is the official skills coach of Team Geronimo. His techniques are proven, his guidance invaluable, and it is time for the gravity biking world to catch up with other sports by retaining coaches – Team Geronimo is honored to be working with Betterride. Gene comments, “I am excited to be working with Team Geronimo. I’ve coached Graeme Pitts and the Buell Brothers in the past, and I look forward to working with Rachel Bauer and Cody Eichhorn. They all have the potential to do really well, and have an impact on the sport. It is going to be a fun and successful race season with one of the best new teams on the circuit.”

James Wilson of MTB Strength Training Systems is the official strength coach of Team Geronimo. Wilson’s program has steadily become recognized as the premier mountain bike strength training system, especially for gravity racers. His workouts produce maximum results that correspond to decreased race times and injury avoidance due to flexibility. Wilson’s routines are sport specific, don’t require a huge investment in time and allow for quick recovery - almost too good to be true.

DRD / Tomac Announces 2010 Team!

‘Dean Racing Development’ (DRD) is proud to announce the creation of a new professional mountain bike race team, lead by industry veteran Dylan Dean. This program was built to establish an elevated atmosphere for top cycling athletes, while guiding young talented riders for future cycling careers.

Joining DRD for the 2010 racing campaign will be Tomac Mountain Bikes. As the official frame supplier to DRD, Tomac’s dedication to the sport of mountain biking will help continue to relate the legendary brand’s name with true American racing. Equipped with high quality products (such as the Primer, Vanish, Snyper, Automatic & Cortez), the DRD Tomac team will without doubt be one of the most visible & recognizable teams on the North American circuit.

“I am a big fan of gravity racing, but there are so few programs that we want to be involved in,” said Tomac’s Joel Smith. “Dylan’s team is definitely the exception and we are excited & proud to be a part of it. It’s a great group of talented riders and we expect them to do some damage on the circuit this year.”

The 2010 DRD Tomac team roster includes highly successful & talented athletes such as pro riders Kieran Bennett (NZL), Robin Baloochi (USA), John Keep (USA), and junior rider Brad King (USA).

Brief Statement On Sam Blenkinsop Injury

Sam Blenkinsop has broken his left wrist during official training at the 2nd Round of the South Island Cup in New Zealand, in Dunedin.

Full details on the injury aren't available yet. Sam is flying back to his home town of Wanganui in order to have the wrist x-rayed in the morning, and have a full assessment made. The wrist was too swollen to be x-rayed in Dunedin.

Results will be known tomorrow and a recovery prognosis will be made. The injury is not thought to be too serious.

Matti Lehikoinen Joins CRC/Intense!

We are delighted to announce that Matti Lehikoinen from Finland will be joining Team Chain Reaction Cycles.com/Intense for the 2010 race season.

Since finishing 2nd overall in 2007, Matti's World Cup seasons have been hampered by injury - he is now back to full health and in the middle of a tough winter training schedule preparing for the 2010 season.

The last 2 years have been hard on Matti - firstly he broke his back at the end of 2007, then breaking both his wrists in Canberra for the Australian round of the 2008 World Cup series. Matti then had another bad crash last year at the Bromont World Cup round breaking more bones and putting him out for the remainder of the season.

Matti is a great addition to the team roster... Team Chain Reaction Cyles/Intense fully believe in his ability and feel with the support of our team and his return to Intense frames will help him get back on the podium at World Cup level and allow him to achieve his goals for 2010.

Transition Bike's Factory Race Team for 2010!

Transition Bikes is pleased to announce the launch of their highly anticipated Factory Race program!

To aid in this new direction Transition has hired Lars Sternberg as an athlete, and team director. Joining Lars on the squad is the world renowned duo of Jill Kintner, and Bryn Atkinson. In her first year racing professional Downhill, Jill will bring the fitness and bike handling skills that have made her an Olympic BMX Bronze Medalist and 4X World Champion to a whole new riding discipline. With many years experience racing at the Elite level, Bryn is a regular top ten finisher in World Cup rounds. Together they will embark on one of the most progressive schedules in 2010. While Bryn will be attacking the downhill World Cup circuit, Jill and Lars will be setting their sights on the North American race scene. In between World Cup rounds Bryn will be returning to join the team for key North American events.

Transition Bikes have kept a watchful eye on the race segment for some time now. With the rise and fall of the infamous NORBA Nationals, and the resurgence of multiple successful regional series’, Transition Bikes feels it is the right time to take a leap into the race realm. Junior Downhill Sensation Neko Mulally To Join Trek World Racing

Trek World Racing confirmed today that young American star Neko Mulally from Pennsylvania will be joining the team for a full World Cup program, as well as other key events throughout 2010. Neko will be joining gravity team mates Tracy Moseley (GBR), Justin Leov (NZL) and Andrew Neethling (RSA) racing the Session 88. His first race for the team will be in Vigo, Spain, at the end of March.

Neko has had an impressive 2009 season, despite being too young at 16 years to race World Cups, he had the privilege of being the course fore-runner at the Mont-Sainte-Anne and Bromont World Cups, and had some great results throughout the year in east coast racing culminating in a win at the Pro Gravity Tour finals. At Crankworx his 5th in the Canadian Open Downhill, only a few seconds behind established World Cup top 10 pro's, really turned some heads. He also had a 4th in the Dual Slalom at Crankworx.

Neko said today: "I'm so excited to get my first full pro tour of the World Cup circuit confirmed; to be racing at the level I have always dreamed of, and to have such a professional team supporting me. I'm stoked on the bikes and equipment and technology. I can't wait to learn as much as I can from my team mates. Like any junior in my position, I will be hoping to do really well in the Junior World Cup standings, and win a medal for the US at the World Championships at Mont-Sainte-Anne on a course I really like. I can't wait for the season to start!"

He has the right attitude, is a committed athlete who takes his training very seriously, and has a head that is far wiser than his years. Swanguen accepts sanction for doping violation

Colorado Springs, Colo. (October 20, 2009) -- USADA announced today that J.D. Swanguen of San Diego,
CA, an athlete in the sport of cycling, has tested positive for a prohibited substance and accepted a
suspension for his doping offense.

Swanguen, 20, tested positive for Carboxy THC, a metabolite of marijuana and/or hashish in the class of
Cannabinoids, in a sample collected on July 19, 2009 at the USAC MTB National Championships.
Cannabinoids are listed as Specified Substances and are prohibited under the USADA Protocol for Olympic
and Paralympic Movement Testing and the Union Cycliste Internationale, both of which have adopted the
World Anti-Doping Code and the WADA Prohibited List. Cannabinoids are listed as Specified Substances
because they could be susceptible to a credible non-doping explanation, and therefore use of those
substances can result in a reduced sanction.

Swanguen accepted a three-month period of ineligibility, which began on October 9, 2009, the day he
accepted the sanction. As part of his sanction, the period of ineligibility can be suspended and reduced to
time served since he accepted his sanction on October 9, 2009, upon completion of a USADA anti-doping
educational program. As a result of the doping violation, Swanguen has been disqualified from all
competitive results achieved on July 19, 2009, the date of his positive test, through and including the date
the doping education program is completed, including forfeiture of any medals, points, and prizes.

In an effort to aid athletes, as well as all support team members such as parents and coaches, in
understanding the rules applicable to them, USADA provides comprehensive instruction on its website on
the testing process and prohibited substances, how to obtain permission to use a necessary medication,
and the risks and dangers of taking supplements as well as performance-enhancing and recreational drugs.
In addition, the agency manages a drug reference hotline, conducts educational sessions with National
Governing Bodies and their athletes, and proactively distributes a multitude of educational materials, such
as the Guide to Prohibited Substances and Methods, easy-reference wallet cards, periodic newsletters, and
protocol and policy reference documentation.

USADA is responsible for the testing and results management process for athletes in the U.S. Olympic and
Paralympic Movement, and is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and
educational programs.

American Junior Sensation Neko Mulally Signs With 23 Degrees

23 Degrees Sports Management announced today that it has finalized an agreement to represent rising American mountain bike talent, Neko Mulally. The 16 year old gravity rider from Reading in Pennsylvania has had an impressive year despite the fact that he's not yet old enough to race World Cups; that will come next season.

Most notably, at Whistler this year during the Crankworx events, and racing Pro Men, Neko finish 4th in the Dual Slalom (behind world class talents Kyle Strait, Brian Lopes and Johannes Fischbach), and then in the Canadian Open Downhill finished 5th, just seconds behind World Cup stars Brendan Fairclough and Steve Smith.

Neko rode as the forerunner for the Canadian rounds of the UCI World Cup, and is now dead keen to hit the circuit next year in his first World Cup season. Currently a member of Specialized Team America, Neko is open to race for a new program in 2010.

"Next year is a really important year for me. I want to build on the experience I gained this year with my current team, and chase down my goals of being one of the top juniors on the Downhill circuit next year and hopefully gain a medal at my first World Championships. It was really cool to see the Mont-Sainte-Anne course this year, and it's one I'm really looking forward to racing in 2010," said Neko this morning from his home in Pennsylvania.

Founder and Owner of 23 Degrees Sports Management, Martin Whiteley, commented on Neko's signing.

"Neko's been well known in the US for a little while now and he's been getting some pretty impressive results for his age. His skill level is right up there and since one of our other clients, Kyle Strait, is on the same team, we got to spend some time with Neko in Whistler. He impresses me greatly. We haven't signed any new athletes to our management program for more than 2 years as we've been waiting for just the right rider to come along and Neko fits that bill. Course Description:
The Mega DH course is a one of a kind course for a one of a kind event!! A Classic!! This year Northstar has put together an unreal downhill course that will challenge both your skill and your fitness. The course will be approximately 4 miles long with an 1800 foot descent from 8600ft at the summit to 6800ft at mid mountain. I expect to see times ranging from just under ten minutes to fifteen plus minutes depending on ability. As far as course descriptions are concerned: All classes will be on a somewhat rocky descent of a fireroad (east ridge) that will connect to the tahoe trail which is a smooth winding descent to the top of the vista chair. The Sticks and Stones portion of the course is a mix of rocky/ technical singletrack with some drops that have slower ride arounds and some more serious rock gardens that the sport riders will avoid by going over to speed control. The Twigs and berries and speed control trails are more of the wide open high speed singletrack with some nice floating jumps across ski trails and will descend down Frolick (a fireroad) back to lower sticks and stones. All of the courses will converge at the btm of lower pho dogg to finish at the stadium jump. The route the 4-wheel bikes will be taking might be a little longe in mileage and will contain more fireroad sections to avoid sticks and stones.

Pro/Semi-Pro/Expert course: East Ridge, Tahoe Trail, Sticks and Stones, Daytona Berms, and Stadium Jump.

Sport/Beginner: East Ridge, Tahoe Trail, Sticks and Stones, Twigs and Berries, Speed Control, Frolich, Lower Sticks and Stones, Daytona Berms, and Stadium Jump.

Heath and Harvey take inaugural Pro GRT crowns after Mulally and Bourque win at Whiteface

Sixteen year-old Neko Mulally (Reading, Pa./STA) and 44-year-old Dawn Bourque (Campton, N.H./Rhino Bike Works) won the final race on the 2009 USA Cycling Pro Gravity Tour, the Whiteface 5K Downhill. Mulally outrode dozens of the region's best downhillers to post the day's best time at 7:48.15, while Bourque put up the best women's time at 9:41.29. With his win, the young Mulally moved into sixth place in the final Pro GRT standings as Bourque propelled herself into fourth overall. Pro GRT Finals set for Whiteface Mtn, NY!

The 5th stop of the Pro Mountain Bike Gravity Tour (Pro GRT) sets to wrap up the series at Whiteface Resort in Wilmington, New York for the Whiteface 5K DH! This famous east coast event is the perfect setting to hold the Pro GRT finals, as it’s destined to show which athlete has maintained the best fitness during the season.

After the previous stop in Windham, NY, Chris Heath (Manitou–Hayes) jumps ahead of Kain Leonard (Crested Butte Mtn Sports) in the overall rankings. Meanwhile 2nd through 5th is an extremely tight battle with only 10 points separating the group of 5 riders!

In the women’s field, Darian Harvey (Cannondale) extends her lead over the field, but will no doubt give her full effort to capture yet another Pro GRT title! (Darian won the inaugural Pro GRT 4X series title in Windham, NY)

USA Cycling announces nominations to Mountain Bike World Championship Team

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Aug. 13, 2009)—USA Cycling announced today the 43 athletes that have been nominated to represent the United States at the upcoming 2009 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Canberra, Australia, September 1-6.

In the gravity events, Aaron Gwin (Morongo Valley, Calif./Yeti) received the lone men’s downhill automatic nomination by virtue of his third-place World Cup finish and his national championship in that event. Kyle Strait (Riverside, Calif.), Duncan Riffle (Santa Barbara, Calif./Duncan Riffle Racing), Luke Strobel (Renton, Wash./Maxxis), Cody Warren (El Cajon, Calif./Decline), Brian Lopes (Laguna Beach, Calif./Oakley) and Joey Schusler (Boulder, Colo./Yeti-Fox Shox) received discretionary nominations to the elite men’s downhill team. As the winner of the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships downhill contest, Melissa Buhl (Chandler, Ariz./KHS) received the only automatic nomination to the elite women’s downhill squad. Kathy Pruitt (Santa Cruz, Calif./Jamis) will join her as a discretionary selection.

As the national champion, 17-year-old Mitch Ropelato (Ogden, Utah) received an automatic nomination to the elite men’s 4X squad. Mike Haderer (Concord, Calif.) and Blake Carney (Camarillo, Calif.) will join Ropelato on the men’s 4-cross squad as discretionary selections. Buhl and 2008 BMX Olympian Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash./Red Bull) both earned automatic nominations to the women’s 4X squad by virtue of multiple World Cup podium performances.

Eleven junior and U23 cross country athletes were also named to the 2009 UCI Mountain Bike World Championship squad that will represent the United States, along with five junior men’s downhillers. Yeti sweeps Pro GRT men's events at Blast the Mass

Aaron Gwin (Moronga Valley, Calif./Yeti) and Darian Harvey (Durango, Colo./Cannondale) won the men's and women's Downhill contests at the third stop on USA Cycling's Pro Gravity Tour, Blast the Mass. The pair ran away with the wins on the challenging course in Snowmass, Colo. Another Yeti rider, Jared Graves (AUS) took the men's 4X title while Rachel Bauer (Aspen, Colo./Banshee-Poison) topped the small women's pro 4X field. JUSTIN LEOV TAKES MONSTER ENERGY GARBANZO DOWNHILL LEADING AUSSIE, KIWI PODIUM DOMINATION

WHISTLER, BC, August 9, 2009 – Justin Leov beats the dust, and the rest of the field to take top spot in the Monster Energy Garbanzo DH at Kokanee Crankworx 2009. With only one run to make their mark and over 330 competitors over all, there was no room for error.

The Monster Energy Garbanzo DH descends nearly 3,400 feet from top to bottom, through some of the most challenging and aggressive terrain in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. “Riding smart was key today,” says Stacy Kohut, announcer and longtime 4-cross racer. “Justin and Miranda both played it right and came out on top.”

“I held it pretty solid and then during the last minute I really smashed it,” says Leov, first place winner of Pro Men. “Near the end I was just holding on and it worked out.”

Justin Leov (NZL), grabbed first with a time of 13:44.55; second place was Chris Kovarik (AUS), with a time of 13:46.61 and third place went to Sam Hill (AUS), with a time of 13:48.31.

The top rider in the women’s category was Miranda Miller (CAN), with a time of 16:32.32; Emmeline Ragot (FRA) took second place with a time of 16:36.01 and Kathy Pruitt (USA), took third place with a time of 16:52:64.

“I just tried to make sure I peddled hard out of every berm," says Miller, first place winner of the Pro Women category. “It was a little rough and studded but still, a really good course.”

In the Junior Men category, an understated Luke Stevens kept up with the pros, laying down an impressive 14:47:58, taking the top spot. “I tried to keep it pinned and maintain my speed,” says Stevens. “I like to win with a bigger margin, but this is pretty good.”

The Monster Energy Garbanzo DH was the highlight of day two at Kokanee Crankworx 2009. Day three of the eight day Crankworx Festival includes the Baia Brothers demos, WomenzWorx training as well as a massive village wide Bike Expo for all to enjoy.

just got word in from Quinton Spaulding (KHS) that factory ODI/Southridge rider David KlaassenVanOorshot took a high speed spill while practicing on the DH track out in Snowmass, Colorado for the Pro Gravity Tour!

He broke his collar bone, & at least one wrist (most likely scafoid), his other wrist is either badly sprained or broken as well.

Thinking happy thoughts for a speedy recovery!

Windham Mountain to Host 2010 MTB World Cup Finals

WINDHAM, New York--Windham Mountain, New York, becomes the first mainland USA venue since 1992 to host the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup finals, when a multi-discipline event, including cross country, downhill and four cross will conclude the 2010 series, August 28-29.

The last time a world cup mountain bike event took place in the USA was 2005, when the series visited Angel Fire resort in New Mexico. In 1996, the finals venue was Honolulu, Hawaii, and in 1992 the finals venue for the cross country was Vail, Colorado.

Windham Mountain hosted a national series event in 2008, and then again earlier in 2009. Tim Woods, the president and general manager of Windham Mountain, said: "When we were awarded the World Cup finals, we knew it would be critical to develop partnerships with professionals who have ‘been there and done that.’ The margin for error is zero. We worked with Blue Wolf Events last year on the East Coast Nationals and it was immediately clear that their experience, organization and attention to detail are the perfect fit for us. They will be a big part of ensuring that the World Cup’s return to the United States is a success."

One of the most qualified top-level mountain bike event organizers in the US, Jeff Frost of Blue Wolf Events has world cup organization experience dating back to the early ‘90s in Mount Snow. Then in this decade there followed a stint with GaleForce at the world cup races in Napa and Telluride.

The Windham Mountain world cup finals are expected to attract most, if not all, of the top contenders in the world, since only one week later the world championships take place at Mont-Sainte-Anne, near Quebec City.

"With New York City only two and a half hours drive, and Boston only three hours, I think we will see a lot of people come out for this race. It's been a long while since such a concentration of mountain biking talent has visited these shores. I'm getting goose bumps already thinking about the excitement it will generate. The world cup circuit has gotten so competitive again, and there is so much at stake in the finals, I think the atmosphere is going to be just electric," said Jeff Frost.

The importance of bringing world cup racing to US soil cannot be understated. “In Canada and other nations we’ve seen that World Cups are critical for the development of local athletes. The inclusion of Windham, leading up to the world championships, is sure to provide a significant boost to the performances of U.S. athletes, as well as introducing many aspiring young riders to the highest levels of competition.” said veteran journalist Rob Jones, editor of Canadiancyclist.com.

The challenging mountain bike courses in north eastern USA, combined with the compact convenience of the resort accommodations, made this area an annual favorite of riders on the world cup circuit back in the glory days of the 1990s. Journalists of the day recall that some of the greatest races in the history of the sport took place in this part of the world. Windham stands poised to renew an old and very fruitful relationship.

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY (BRAIN)—Dorel Industries purchased Iron Horse Bicycle Company for $5.2 million in an auction Monday in federal bankruptcy court. The deal is scheduled to close on Wednesday.

Dorel owns Pacific Cycle, along with Cannondale, GT, Mongoose and Schwinn brands.

Four other companies—Kent International, Care Bicycles, Dick's Sporting Goods and Outdoor Cycle Group, a company owned by the son of Iron Horse president Cliff Weidberg—also submitted bids for Iron Horse.

Taking place in a small room of over 30 lawyers, company executives and Department of Justice officials, the bidding process was heated but decorous. The respective parties place over 90 bids by the end of the six-hour process. The dramatic highlight came after Kent and Care withdrew from the auction, and Outdoor Cycle formed a bidding coalition with Care in an attempt to muscle out deep-pocketed Dorel.

Both Weidberg and his son, Randall Scott, were present for the auction. Though all parties maintained their civility throughout the process, the mood in the room became strained as Weidberg, counsel Andrew Thaler, and a coterie of accountants were forced to leave the auction room numerous times to discuss whether each offer was actually of greater value than the last. Because of the variety of notes, bullet notes and interest arrangements that could accompany each bid, the group was forced to recess to establish a valuation for more complex bids, so that other bidders could up the ante accordingly.

Bidding opened at $2.775 million in cash and increased in increments of $25,000. Though Outdoor Cycle's one-time pre-auction bid of $5.2-plus million in cash, notes and revenue-sharing would likely have been the most lucrative for the estate over time, Judge Alan Trust ruled yesterday afternoon that Pacific's all-cash offer of $5 million plus a $220,000 one-year note was best for the involved parties.

The sale includes existing Iron Horse inventory, as well as any trademarks and patents owned by the company. According to the purchase agreement, Dorel will also pay CIT Group, Iron Horse’s secured lender, $220,000 on the first anniversary of the closing date of the sale. CIT Group will pay a carve-out of at least $150,000 to the Iron Horse’s unsecured creditors.

Iron Horse was forced into bankruptcy in March by three Asian suppliers who were due more than $5 million in back debt. The company owes another $17 million to dozens of other unsecured creditors, as well as about $4 million to CIT Group.

The bankruptcy sparked a blame game between former principals of the company with president Cliff Weidberg filing a civil lawsuit against former longtime vice president Stewart Barnett and former chief financial officer Nick Aversano accusing the two of falsifying financial statements to inflate the value of the failing company. Suspension designer Dave Weagle is also pursuing litigation against Iron Horse for back debt; that suit will now fall to Dorel for resolution.

According to Doug Pick, counsel for Outdoor Cycle and Randall Scott, the online retailer may strike an agreement with Dorel's Pacific Cycle to purchase the remaining bicycles in inventory at Randall Scott's Colorado warehouse, so that they can continue selling them online. “Outdoor [Cycle] has a lot of respect for Pacific's ability and talent,” Pick said, “and we hope to have a long term relationship with them.” Those talks will be initiated at the end of the week, once the sale is finalized on Wednesday, July 15.

A great R&D guy and not a bad racer, either. After a decades absence from the sport, Palm finished 2nd last weekend at the California Golden State Championships in Fontana. He is planning to use mountain bike racing as training for his attempt later this year at a spot on the US Olympic bordercross team.

"I have always done better in my sports when I stayed involved in two or three at a time. The worst thing for me is for my bad brains to sit around idle. I have to stay busy and the panic of racing downhill will keep me sharp and help me to achieve my olympic dreams", says Palmer. " Of course, I miss being at the races and I miss the fans but mostly I miss hanging out with my friends, especially Peaty."

Palmer could have had any bike but he says he chose Intense because of his relationship with the brand and Steber's ability to build anything Palmer wants in a bike, anytime. "Plus, I'm 40 now and I want to be involved with a brand that will allow me to use my design abilities now and in the long run." Palmer says.

2010 World Cup Dates Announced! USA INCLUDED as FINALS!

The International Cycling Union’s (UCI) Management Committee, which is meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on June 18th and 19th, today approved the calendar for the 2010 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

The 2010 World Cup will include six rounds for each discipline and will take place at nine venues in eight countries.

Two new venues in 2010

Dalby Forest, in North Yorkshire, Great Britain, will open proceedings for the 2010 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. This region in the north of England will host, for the first time, the cross country specialists in the world series.

After an absence of four years, the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup will make its big comeback in the United States in 2010. For the first time, the ski resort of Windham, in the state of New York, will host the world’s best cross country Olympic, downhill and 4-cross specialists for the final of the season. This will take place a few days before the World Championships in Mt-Ste-Anne (CAN).

The 20th edition of the Mountain Bike World Cup will also stop over in Houffalize (BEL), Maribor (SLO), Offenburg (GER), Fort William (GBR), Schladming (AUT), Champéry (SUI) and Val di Sole (ITA). This Italian resort is new to the World Cup calendar this year, but has already hosted the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships in 2008.

Missy Giove update

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Former mountain biking world champion Melissa "Missy" Giove was ordered held on $250,000 bail Thursday after federal authorities said they seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana from a truck she was driving in upstate New York.

Giove, 37, and Eric Canori, 30, of Wilton were charged Tuesday with conspiring to possess and distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana.

Nearly 400 pounds of pot were seized from the truck and from Canori's home outside Saratoga Springs, 25 miles north of Albany, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

Canori was ordered held on $500,000 bail at the detention hearing Thursday. Giove and Canori were also ordered to surrender their passports, attend all court appearances and notify authorities of any changes in phone number or address should they post bail. Judge David Homer also imposed travel restrictions on both.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Belliss had asked for no bail, saying Giove and Canori are flight risks, but Homer cited the pair's lack of criminal history and family and business ties to their communities.

Authorities learned of Giove and Canori's plans last weekend when Illinois State Police pulled over a woman driving a truck and trailer loaded with about 220 pounds of marijuana, DEA spokeswoman Erin Mulvey said. Authorities completed the delivery to the Albany area, where Mulvey said Giove picked up the vehicle and trailer.

Giove is accused of then driving north and following Canori to his home, where some of the trailer's contents were unloaded.

Giove was later arrested at nearby Saratoga Lake, authorities said. A search of Canori's home turned up more than 150 pounds of pot and more than $1 million in cash stashed in a closet and the basement, the DEA said.

In court Thursday, public defender Tim Austin said the drugs and money were planted in Giove's truck, possibly by police.

Giove, nicknamed "The Missile," was the downhill world champion in 1994 and won World Cup season titles in '97 and '98, then captured national titles from 1999-2001. One of the sport's first mainstream female stars, she retired from downhill racing in 2003.

A former champion downhill mountain biker known for her outrageous looks and daredevil riding style was busted on Tuesday and charged with marijuana distribution by federal agents in upstate Wilton, N.Y.

Missy "The Missile" Giove, 37, and co-defendant Eric Canori, 30, face up to 40 years in prison and a $2 million fine if convicted.

"Drug trafficking can lead you downhill fast," Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent John Gilbride said.

Giove is the most successful and perhaps colorful rider in competitive mountain biking's history. She grabbed a record 14 National Off-Road Bicycle Association championships and 11 World Cup wins, but her success was only part of her appeal. Giove, who sported a punk hair-do during her competitive riding days, rode with a dead piranha around her neck - to remind her to be aggressive - and the ashes of her deceased dog tucked inside her sports bra. Giove was also openly lesbian, a rarity in the homophobic world of sports.

In many ways, she was the face of her sport - she was featured in a Reebok ad and in several lifestyle magazines. Giove was also interviewed by David Letterman.

A criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Albany says that officers with an upstate drug task force learned that Giove, Canori and others conspired to possess and distribute a large amount of marijuana. Investigators watched Giove, who lives in Chesapeake, Va., get off a plane at the Albany County Airport and take a cab to a hotel, where she met a confidential informant and picked up a pick-up truck and box-trailer.

Giove drove the truck to Canori's home in Wilton, just north of Saratoga Springs. Some of the contents of the trailer were unloaded at Canori's home.

Investigators followed Giove when she left the Wilton residence and her truck was stopped by investigators. Approximately 400 pounts of marijuana were found in the trailer and at Canori's house.

Giove and Canori made their initial court appearance in Albany on Wednesday before United States Magistrate Judge David Homer. A detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
